The Gate of Heavenly
Peace (Part II)
During the Spring of 1989, nightly news accounts filmed in Tiananmen
Square alternately enthralled and horrified millions of viewers around
the globe. THE GATE OF HEAVENLY PEACE, a three hour documentary film,
revisits these events and explores the complex political process that
eventually led to the Beijing Massacre of June 4th.
In April 1989, following the death of deposed Communist Party reformer
Hu Yaobang, students occupied Tiananmen Square. They used the occasion
of Hu’ s death to protest government corruption and call for
political reform.
The citizenry responded strongly to their demonstrations. At the height
of this protest movement, more than one million people marched in
the streets of Beijing to support the students. Mass demonstrations
occurred in many cities around the country.
In May 1989, the international media converged on China to cover the
visit of Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev. They came for the summit
but walked into what looked like a revolution. It was clamorous, colourful
and highly photogenic. The media painted moving portraits of idealistic
pro-Western students willing to die for democracy, pitted against
aging Communist autocrats.
The reality was far more complex and disturbing. Student leaders were
united by a sense of their own historical importance, but they did
not always agree about goals, strategies, or tactics. Even while they
protested some features of Communist rule, their own ideas and behaviour
showed heavy influence by Communist Party ideology.
The government was divided as well. Some leaders saw all protest as
counterrevolutionary, but others were anxious to avert repression
and push China in the direction of gradual political reform. |

WHEN
THE MOORS RULED IN EUROPE
The, lets be honest, rather lovely, historian Bettany Hughes takes
us on a fascinating tour deep into the past as she examines the period
of time when the Moors ruled over what would become Spain and Portugal.
Ruling for more than 700 years, the Moors and their advanced ideas
about agriculture, art and mathematics made major inroads into Dark
Ages Europe helping lead the way for the Renaissance.
Over the years Spain's history keepers have tried to down play the
role the Moors played in the development of their history but lately
major archaeological advances are throwing whole swathes of fresh
light on to the period. Hughes also shows us the incredible mathematic
that lay behind the creation of the amazing Alhambra Palace and traces
El-Cids Moorish roots. Also its amazing to think in these
troubled times that we are living in is just how integrated the
different cultures were, this highly progressive Islamic race right
in the heart of Christian Europe attracted thousands of willing
converts to their cause.
A highly informative and entertaining documentary that is worth
seeking out |

In
Search Of Gandhi
In the early decades of the twentieth century Mahatma Gandhi’s
legacy of non-violent revolution or Satyagraha inspired a mass movement
of millions of Indians to rise up against the British colonial state
and successfully agitate for the establishment of a democratic and
free India. But what kind of democracy does India have today? What
does it actually mean to live in the world’s largest democracy?
In a road movie style the film crew travels down the famous trail
of Gandhi’s salt march, the remarkable mass campaign that galvanized
ordinary Indians to join the non-violent struggle for democracy and
freedom almost a century ago. Stopping at the same villages and cities,
where Gandhi and his followers had raised their call for independence,
the film documents the stories of ordinary citizens in India today.
Although inspired by a historical event In Search Of Gandhi is not
a journey back in time. Instead it is a search for the present and
future of democracy in India. |

A
CRUDE AWAKENING
A CRUDE AWAKENING …” is an enlightening, intelligent,
and profoundly shocking documentary feature film about how the citizens
of planet earth are sucking dry our most valuable and non-renewable
natural resource: oil.Wonderfully crafted by award-winning European
filmmakers Basil Gelpke and Ray McCormack, it shows you needn’t
be a conspiracy theorist to see a connection between America’s
current obsessions with the Middle East and national security, and
the world’s
looming oil crisis. The frenzied search for alternative sources
of energy now being pursued by the largest multi-national energy
corporations and academic institutes makes it clear they also believe
a crisis is fast approaching. Candid and thought-provoking interviews
from the worlds’ top experts make it abundantly clear that
we are dangerously close to the bottom of the barrel. However, whilst
hinting at just how dark the post-oil world could be, this highly
entertaining yet disturbing exposé provides not only questions
but a glimmer of possible solutions to the most perplexing and important
economic, environmental and public policy issue of our time |

Pakistan's
War: On The Front Line
A slick production, well researched and creatively edited, the documentary
Essentially depicting Pakistan Army’s version of the ongoing
war against tribal militants, a two-part documentary series titled
“Pakistan’s War — The Battle Within”.
The story-line contests the global impression that Islamabad is
not doing enough on this front and reinforces the argument that
the frequent US drone attacks in the tribal region have rendered
the war unpopular inside Pakistan.
“We are suffering the maximum, we are contributing the maximum
... we are sacrificing for the sake of the world,” says a
Pakistani army officer to presenter Rageh Omar in a tone dripping
with a mixture of pain and frustration.
Shot on the battlefronts of Swat and Bajaur with glimpses of encounters,
counterattacks, advances and retreats under heavy artillery bombardment
the documentary throws into bold relief the difficulties and dangers
of fighting a guerilla war in an un-chartered territory with the
Taliban having a complete sway of the terrain.

Crude
Crude, a superbly crafted, 90 minute documentary
spanning 160 million years of the Earth's history to reveal the
story of oil. From the food on our tables to the fuel in our cars,
crude oil seeps invisibly into almost every part of our modern lives.
It is the energy source and raw material that drives transport and
the economy. Yet many of us have little idea of the incredible journey
it has made to reach our petrol tanks and plastic bags.
Coming in the wake of rising global concerns about the continued
supply of oil, and increasingly weird weather patterns, award-winning
Australian filmmaker, Dr Richard Smith takes us through time: from
the birth of oil deep in the dinosaur-inhabited past, to its ascendancy
as the indispensable ingredient of modern life. Filmed on location
in 11 countries across five continents, Smith consults the leading
international scientific experts to join the dots between geology
and economy and provide the big-picture view of oil.
